Forest Hills Chamber Players to perform in Flushing By Elisa Infosino 06/15/2006 The Forest Hills Chamber Players, a chamber music group based in Forest Hills, is slated to give a free concert Monday at the Flushing Branch of the Queens Public Library. The Forest Hills Chamber Players will take the audience on a musical journey as the group presents a program called "Room for Interpretation: from Bach to Bartok." The group consists of Tanya Dusevic Witek, flutist, Krystof Witek, violinist, and Katherine Cherbas, cellist. The group has recently been named as the Ensemble-in-Residence at the Queens Museum of Art. The players' performances are unique because they include a musical component and an interactive educational component. The musicians provide background information about the selections in order to enhance the audience's understanding. "We give each of our programs a theme, and we explore it," Krystof Witek said. The audience is given an opportunity to ask questions and comment about the themes presented. The theme of the June 19 concert will be folk music. The interaction with the audience is very important to the players. "We work best with an active audience," Cherbas said. "I like playing community venues because oftentimes you get a chance to get closer to the audience," Tanya Dusevic Witek said. Each member of the players is an accomplished professional musician. Together, the group strives to promote musical appreciation by giving free concerts to Queens residents who may otherwise not have access to live musical performances. The group has given free concerts at venues such as museums, libraries, and senior centers. At this concert the group will present music composed by Bach, Bartok, Schulhoff, and Villa-Lobos. The selections will include Bach's "Trio Sonata in G Major," "BWV 1038," Villa-Lobos's "Finale" from "Jet Whistle" and Bartok's "Six Romanian Folkdances" arranged for flute trio by Krystof Witek. Traditional Taiwanese songs arranged by Krystof Witek will also be played, including compositions titled "White Peony" and "Youthful Mountain." Queens' residents who have attended other concerts by the group have been appreciative of the performances. "There's a lot of audience feedback," said Sara Angel Guerrero-Rippenberger, outreach coordinator of the Queens Museum of Art. She also said "a lot of seniors say it's the highlight of their week." According to Gina Fazio of the Flushing Branch of the Queens Public Library, Forest Hills Chamber Players concerts "usually have a full house. They are a group which we have come to enjoy." The June 19 concert is being sponsored by Grand Pacific USA, a Flushing-based business that specializes in construction and business loans. The Forest Hills Chamber Players will be performing at the Flushing Branch of the Queens Public Library, 41-17 Main St., Flushing, at 6 p.m. For more information call 718-661-1200. ©Times Ledger 2006 |
